The Wylie Championship Rodeo -  The long-time tradition of rodeo in Wylie continues.  This two-day event begins Friday, September 12^th at 6:30 pm through Saturday, September 13^th.   The Wylie Rodeo is a community event that has something for everyone. Besides the Pro Rodeo action, there will be western themed craft and vendor booths for that early Christmas shopping, food from a variety of concessionaires and a Kiddie Corral that just keeps getting better every year.  Besides the games and bouncy houses, there will be mechanical bull rides and other surprises for the more adventurous in attendance.

The festivities begin Friday with the preliminary round of Mutton Bustin’ for those kids who are 55lbs & under.  In Mutton Bustin’, the kids hang on tight to some local (and feisty) sheep for an opportunity to win the coveted Mutton Bustin’ Belt Buckles.  For details on the kids events check online at www.wyliechamber.org for sign-up information.  Both nights, the Rodeo will begin with the Grand Entry, which is an opportunity for anyone in the community to ride in on their horse (Proof of Negative Coggins Required).

Brittany Dockery competed in the National 4-H shooting sports competition in Grand Island, Nebraska in June. She did the hunting discipline which includes three different tests and four different shooting events. The shooting events were Shotgun, Archery, .22 rifle and Muzzleloader. Brittany took home a 7th place overall in the nation. She also earned a 4th place ribbon in Wildlife Identification and Management.

Brittany is from Wylie TX, and has been part of the Collin County 4-H Shooting sports program for 4 years and is currently serving as the President. She has been hunting with her dad since she was 11 years old. She enjoys shooting archery, muzzleloader, shotgun and rifle. Other than the shooting sports, Brittany enjoys working and playing with her dogs, running Karaoke every week, and riding horses.

Brittany was chosen to represent Texas on the hunting team last January by completing several essays, getting recommendations and scoring well in competitions including the State games in San Antonio.

Brittany would like to thank the Collin County 4-H Field and Stream club, Bass Pro, and CARGO members especially Mr. Mooney, Mr. Grubbs, Mr. Curtis, Mr. McCoy and Mr. Cortez for all of their support.

Dog Daze Dog Wash

Volunteers will be washing dogs, clipping nails, expressing glands, and for the little princesses,

painting nails!  Bow and bandanas are also available along with homemade doggie treats!  After your doggie is all clean, have their picture taken with our wonderful photographer! 

All proceeds will be donated to the Screws family to assist with medical costs associated with their Great Pyrenees/Lab mix, Phoebe, who has a medical condition requiring expensive medication.  The Screws family is active with SPIN, a rescue group that helps Great Pyrenees find forever homes and works tirelessly in saving dogs from cruel conditions and getting them healthy and rehomed.

 Wash:  $5-15 (depending on the size of dog)

Yesterday, the 3rd Squadron 124th Cavalry of the Texas National Guard left Wylie as they are being deployed to Iraq. Soldiers leaving the armory on Monday morning, July 28th, will make a parade like tour through downtown Wylie before departing. Around 7:30 am, they will head South on Hwy 78 before turning right on Ballard Street. They will continue to Brown, before heading back to 78. Here is an opportunity for you to show your support and appreciation for those soldiers heading out for an indefinite amount of time.

Alicia Young has been organizing these parade efforts and expects a solid turnout. The newly opened Majestic Ballroom and Dance Center on Ballard Street will be open at 7 am to serve coffee. Take out a few moments of your day to wave goodbye to our troops.

The City of Wylie is pleased to announce that Community Waste Disposal (CWD) has been selected as the City’s solid waste and recycling provider beginning September 1. Please continue to use the Allied Waste carts through August 29.

CWD was selected based on their reputation for excellent service; overall low cost; strong recommendations from the cities of Frisco, Allen and Little Elm; and a unanimous recommendation from the Solid Waste Citizens Advisory Committee made up of Wylie residents.

Delivery of your new grey trash cart and blue recycling cart began July 15. In order to ensure a smooth transition from Allied Waste to CWD, be sure to read the Trash and Recycling Guide attached to your new trash cart. The guide contains information on pick-up schedules, brush & bulk call-in details, pick-up guidelines and recycling guidelines.

Allied Waste will pick up your old carts after your last scheduled pick-up.

Fee for Flag football will be $165.00.
This fee will include a home game jersey, away game jersey, game pants, game socks and WCYFA t-shirt.
This fee also covers helmet rental, league fees, refs, fields, insurance, and trophy or medal, etc.

Flag will need a mouth piece, football cleats, practice shorts and shirt in the follow colors:
Shorts - Black
T-Shirt - Plain White
No other equipment will be needed for flag.

Flag Division DOES play 11 man regulation football.

Fee for 1A - 3A will be $200.00.
This will include a home game jersey, away game jersey, game pants, game socks, helmet decals and WCYFA t-shirt.
This fee also covers league fees, refs, fields, insurance, and trophy or medal, etc.

The equipment 1A - 3A teams will need to purchase is a helmet, shoulder pads, pads for pants, football cleats, and a mouth piece. This equipment is standard for any tackle league.
1A - 3A will also need a practice jersey and practice pants in following colors:
1A - White Pants and White Practice Jersey
2A - White Pants and Maroon Practice Jersey
3A - White Pants and Black Practice Jersey

Fees will be due on Tuesday, July 15th @ uniform fitting.

All games played in/on stadium type fields.
Seventh graders are welcome to play as long as they fit into the age division requirements.

The City of Wylie continues making the Summer events one to remember for ages to come. There is no concert tonight as tomorrow night is movie night at Olde City Park! The flick starts at 9:30, kind of late, I know, but you can’t watch a movie in the sun. You just can’t do it.

The first movie of the series is Bee Movie! We rented this movie a while back and the kids absolutely loved it. It’s good for the parents, as well. I’m not going to tell you about how it brought a tear to my eye. Because it didn’t. I’m cold and a man and I just don’t tear up during animated kid flicks. I don’t care if dreams are realized after long and traumatic journeys, I don’t tear up. So I won’t tell you about that part.

Wait…

Yeah, anyway. Tomorrow night, June 27th, 9:30 pm at Olde City Park. Bring your blankets or chairs, snacks and drinks and enjoy a movie with your neighbors in the park. Shrek 3 will be the feature presentation on July 25th.

WYLIE, TX (June 17, 2008) – On a cool spring day in April at Olde City Park in historic downtown Wylie, giddy guests gathered for a beautiful wedding. Ocean and ChrisW would exchange vows in front of their loved ones and friends: judybug, Lady Di, marknjul, mom of 3, momof4, Bodance, lrsimms, jett1boo and many others excited to share in this one-of-a-kind event.

If the happy couple’s name and guest list sounds unique, well, they are. What makes it even more unique is that many of the guests had never even met the bride and groom until this very day. You see, the couple and guests are part of an on-line community message board, The Wylie View. Wylie View members create an alias to post messages instead of using their real name. And it is on The Wylie View, the only one of its kind in and around Wylie, Texas, that the idea of a Wylie View wedding was conceived.

It started when Ocean (Renea Dobbs) asked for encouragement and prayers from her new found virtual friends. She joined in January 2008 and saw how supportive The Wylie View members where in a forum marked Prayer Requests. She asked her fellow Wylie Viewers to pray for her oldest son to understand why she and the love of her life couldn’t get married this year. Though Ocean and ChrisW (Chris Walker) had been together for 13 years, circumstances prevented them from tying the knot. A marriage by a judge would not do… they wanted to be married in the eyes of God.

Many Wylie View members responded to her request by offering their understanding and prayer. But one Wylie View member saw an opportunity, an opportunity to have the first ever Wylie View wedding! Newly licensed to preside over weddings, a man of God, Earl Newsom (his member alias and real name), announced that Ocean and ChrisW would indeed have their wedding this year and he personally would officiate.

Now all that was needed was a venue, time, and guests. That’s where The Wylie View members came in. Lady Di (aka Diane Culver) was appointed the wedding coordinator and asked the giving community of Wylie Viewers to pitch in. Bodance provided perfectly timed music and DJ services. Over Yonder’s wife, Jayne, supplied an elegant three tired cake. MrsHobbyLobby made the beautiful flower arrangements. Jessamos organized the delicious food, making much of it herself. Mortimer, jnewsom, and darndest photographed the event. Mom of 3 donated the chairs and helped momof4 and Hopemarie decorate the gazebo and pavilion. Alicia created a handmade guest book containing photos she took of the couple before the wedding. So many people, many whom had never met in person, offered support with their time, talents, and monetarily to make this wedding happen.

It was an exciting event; the bride was glowingly beautiful, the groom handsome and the happy couple’s family proud. After the wedding, ChrisW made a post on the message board saying, “I would like to let everyone involved in giving us this beautiful wedding know that we will cherish this for rest of our lives. Thanks for a meaningful future!”

The wedding was a success because a few caring people acted on a simple yet profound prayer request to help a mother’s son’s dream come true. The Wylie View has proven over and over again to be a generous community that allows compassion and kindness to go beyond the keyboard and computer screen. The Wylie View is a living, breathing community of good-hearted people living in and around Wylie, Texas.
